The Mercer County ESC approached us about two weeks before the release of the state report cards for Ohio schools with deep concerns over the accuracy of information in the upcoming release. Everyone involved in this project believes that presenting faulty information to the public is not in any way beneficial, so a the idea of a newsletter presenting accurate information and highlighting the many accomplishments of our schools was conceived.
Shelly Vaughn, Superintendent of the Mercer County ESC visited the junior Tri Star Graphic Communications class (that's us) and explained their idea and goals for the newsletter. Staff at the ESC had compiled about six pages of raw information (with more continuing to trickle in) and challenged the students to design a 4-page newsletter.

After reviewing the breadth of information provided and analyzing the most efficient production methods, we decided upon the Folded Self Mailer style that later went into production. This allowed us to separate the information into logical sections and simple visual graphics that would make for easy understanding of the vast array of facts being presented. The rolled format also allowed us to control the user experience - revealing one step at a time, like telling a story.
From the beginning, we viewed this project largely as an infographic - enabling us to simplify the presentation of information through a few powerful visuals.
The size was determined by looking at what standard paper sizes were available to us, and what we could do to minimize production costs.
